Some Facts about Termites

  • No property is safe from termites! Termites are the cause of the greatest economic losses of timber in service, in Australia.
  • 1 in every 3 homes is attacked by termites at some stage in its life.
  • Latest figures suggest that the annual cost of termite infestation in Australia now exceeds one billion dollars.
  • Australia’s subterranean termites are the most destructive timber pests in the world.
  • It can take as little as 3 months for a termite colony to severely damage almost all the timber in a home.
  • Termites cause more damage to homes than floods, fire and storms put together and it can cost $100,000 or more to fix.
  • No given property can be fully protected against termite activity, termites are part of nature and nature will continue to function around us in the foreseeable future, as termite species are not nearing extinction termite activity will continue

What can be done to minimise the risk of termite attack? - Integrated Pest Management (IPM)

There are a number of simple strategies that any one can do to reduce the risk of termite infestation and in case of an attack ensure that any damage is kept to a minimum:

  • Termites love moisture so it is important to eliminate any source of constant moisture around your home. Leaking pipes or gutter, leaking hot water services or overflow from air conditioners should all be attended to.
  • Timber products around the structure should not be in contact with the ground.
  • Piling of soil or timber against external walls should be also avoided. A common point of entry into these structures is over the edge of the slab, materials stored in this manner gives the termites a concealed entry point.
  • Do not plant trees, shrubs and climbers against a building, and be aware that nests in mature eucalypts, tree stumps and hardwood sleeper walls are potential sources of building infestations.
  • Regular inspections will catch the arrival of termites sooner and allow for remedial treatments to be commenced thereby reducing the amount of damage they cause.
  • Termite monitoring and baiting stations can be used as termite alarm systems and with the introduction of bait can eliminate the colony and thereby protect the structures where they are installed.
  • Chemical Soil Barrier treatments of the soil under and around the structure can be used to prevent termites gaining concealed entry into buildings.
  • The last solution is a chemical treatment of live termites that have already gained an entry to your house. Their presence is usually discovered after damaged to timber has been done and the treatment may end up being the most expensive.
  • If you find any active termites do not disturb them or attempt to spray them with insect spray; you may potentially make them move to another area of your property and cause more damage!

Termite Control - Chemical Barrier Treatment

The chemical soil barrier involves treating the soil around the perimeter of the house . This deters termites traveling through the soil to get to the base of the structure and the timber above. Trenching, drilling and rod injection will be performed by our technician to ensure that the chemical barrier is positioned at the right depth and that “continuous band” has been achieved.

There are several different termicides available on the market, however only one product - like no other - will not only kill termites that are present, but it will also prevent concealed entry to structure for a minimum period of 8 years. This product is TERMIDOR from BASF

Termidor has also unique features that make it particularly effective:

  • TERMIDOR will not repel termites and therefore they cannot avoid the treatment.
  • TERMIDOR is fast - On average, termite activity was eliminated within 4.3 weeks in Australian trials.
  • TERMIDOR has the unique TRANSFER EFFECT mode of action- the product not only provides a barrier to termite entry, but will also be transferred to other termites and may wipe out the entire colony.
  • TERMIDOR is less water-soluble and binds more tightly to the organic matter in soil than other non-repellent termiticides. This means it stays where it is applied.
  • TERMIDOR has a very low odour, and will not harm soil microorganisms, earthworms and plants

This is why, we strongly recommend and use this product in our treatments. We are accredited by BASF Termidor Applicator and always ensure that our installation procedure strictly follow manufactures recommendations and Australian Standards.
